GW: What would you say is most distinctive about Alice In Chains? Layne's vocals are unique, as is your approach to the guitar and sound.
Jerry: I think both those things are distinctive - and they go hand in hand. Our music has grown more because we've grown more. The guitar riffs on "Hate To Feel" and "Angry Chair" are some of the sickest riffs on the album, and those are Layne's songs - he wrote those on guitar and he plays them live.
GW: Layne plays guitar?
Jerry: Totally. We're all growing as players, including Layne. And he's helped me grow as a singer. Powerful back-up vocals have been something that we've really lacked live, and that's something I'm working on. As for those things we're known for - our trademarks - the reason they're so much more immense this time is that we've really just naturally evolved.
